Learning to Live Together Authentically, Abundantly and Sustainably

Choosing the Right Coach

If you’re reading this page, you’ve probably decided, or begun to conclude, that coaching might just support you. We have found that while coaching is a wonderfully effective process it is, above all else, a relationship and it is vital that you work with the “right coach for you”!

The “right coach” might be someone who has similar personal or professional background to yourself — or quite a different one — or they might simply be someone with whom you feel there is great chemistry. Regardless, we believe that the coach-client relationship is vital to the success.

With this in mind, we offer you a choice of coaches, who have been chosen for the following reasons:

“Coaching is,
above all else, a relationship
and it is vital that
you work with the
“right coach for
you!”

Diverse backgrounds.
We work in partnership with a group of carefully identified coaching associates, each of whom has broad life experience and a relevant professional background. The professional backgrounds of our coaches include management in corporate and not-for-profit sectors, media, sale & marketing, education, financial services and pastoral care.

Appropriate qualifications.
In addition, each of our coaches has been selected on the basis of their professional competence, including successful completion of professional coach-specific training. Each coach has the Diploma of Professional Coaching qualification from Coach School — the highest level of professional coach training offered in Western Australia, and amongst the highest offered across Australia.

Assurance of ethical conduct.
All our coaches are also members of the International Coach Federation (ICF), the implication of which includes their agreement with, and commitment to a pledge of professional ethics and standards of conduct, including coach-client confidentiality, the need to establish clear agreements, possible conflicts of interest, and other matters which assure client safety and respect. Your coach will provide you with a copy of this pledge at the out set of the coaching relationship.

Our Coaches

Ken Maley

Ken Maley Ken Maley has come to professional coaching via a twenty-five year career in the media. As a photographer with the West Australian newspaper, Ken learned the art of effective communication through daily interaction with people from all facets of society in every imaginable circumstance. He estimates that he has enabled well over 20,000 people to relax in front of the camera!

A chance encounter with Coach School director Kim Lisson, several years ago, first raised Ken’s interest in coaching. As a client he was enabled to make powerful decisions in his life, and was fascinated by the resonance of coaching with the skills that he had intuitively developed over the years in his life in photojournalism. It was a natural progression for Ken to add the rigour of academic study to his natural gift in this area.

Ken ranks his family as number one priority in life. He is married with three children, one of whom has a disability. At first he assessed his son’s condition as a crisis, but has been through a learning journey that has led him to be grateful for the unique gifts that all of his children offer.

While he finds that his wide ranging life experience equips him for successfully and empathetically coaching to people from all sectors of the community, he particularly enjoys coaching with other men who are dealing with life’s challenges.

In Ken’s view there is nothing as practical and down to earth as listening and responding to our inner voice, and he loves being with people as they open new doors.

Ken believes that it is impossible to be in a state of unhappiness while being grateful or generous, and tries to practise both. He likes to laugh, and confesses to have a somewhat wacky sense of humour!

What some of Ken's clients have said:
I have greatly appreciated my time with Ken – our monthly meetings help keep me on track and to think through issues – I find clarity and hopefully make wise choices – Ken is a sounding board and helps me to “think outside the square” – this is particularly helpful when I am feeling a bit “swamped”.

I admire how perceptive he is and I definitely respect that he is coaching for the benefit of others.

He has an amazing ability to see something good in almost everything. I never felt judged or that my issues were not worthy. Ken made me feel very comfortable throughout the coaching sessions.

I appreciated Ken’s supportive nature and intuition. Ken regularly picked out pieces on information that I had never thought of or recognised. The ease with which he presents himself put me at ease!

Pauline Wearne

Pauline Wearne With over 10 years teaching experience in Australia and overseas, including with young offenders, Pauline has become very interested in and drawn to facilitated learning, in particular the way this process encourages focus, stimulation and engagement. More recently Pauline has worked within the financial services industry focussing on relationship management and creating training solutions for a wide variety of clients.

Pauline’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and a Master of Education, all from Edith Cowan University. She also has a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment. Pauline thinks of herself as having gypsy blood, the happy wanderer with a passion for travel and experiencing places, art, people and cultures. This is balanced by her enjoyment of being with her family and friends.

Tanya McAullay

Tanya McAullay Tanya has been very successful in Sales, Business Development and Account Management in both Melbourne and Perth. This path started in tourism, then media and most recently adult training and development. As part of her career she has been involved in a range of training qualifications, always thoroughly engaging in the field in which she is working, focusing on the client and their needs.

Tanya’s experience as a coach includes working with a variety of people who are particularly looking for clarity and direction in their lives. Her focus is to work from the principle that the client is the expert of their life, and to then facilitate this discovery. Tanya has coached clients in both Australia and overseas, discovering the unique skill required for telephone coaching.

Tanya has always been interested in personal growth and development and believes that each person has the capacity to achieve their own goals. Tanya acknowledges that the pace of daily life doesn’t often allow the opportunity to share or grow your own “story”. Coaching really allows each individual this opportunity. Coaching provides Tanya with the opportunity to support and encourage people to learn and move towards their own personal achievements – to live a great life!

She started her own coaching business this year, Diamond Coaching — a business name chosen to acknowledge the amount of dedication and commitment that is needed (by miners) to uncover hidden gems. Tanya believes that a similar dedication and commitment is necessary for personal development. Tanya naturally approaches her clients with warmth and enthusiasm. Her second language is Japanese and she always has a bag packed ready for a travel adventure!

My distinctiveness as a coach:
Honest, caring and very supportive, with a particular energy for authentically engaging with clients. Warm, open and respectful with a tender heart and sensitivity to others.

What some of Tanya’s clients have said:
“The coach’s whole being communicated concern”

‘I admire Tanya’s interpersonal skills, her positive attitude and her enthusiasm for life in general”.

“I felt safe and cared for, the coach maintained a good “presence”, attentiveness, space, silence and most importantly, did not try to “fix”.

Anne Courtney

Anne Courtney Anne’s work choices have followed her personal passion for creating a more sustainable world and as such the last twenty years have been spent working in a variety of roles in the community sector. Anne has many years experience in providing direct care at a practical and emotional level for people needing support due to a variety of circumstances (young people in foster care, frail aged people and people with limited resources). In many roles, she saw the benefit of getting people to work together as a community to address their own challenges. She has also worked in organisations that specifically aim to educate and inspire people to become active in creating a better world by following their own passions. Having managed a non-government organisation for seven years, Anne took a turn in her career to focus on coaching people to reach their potential and thus enabling them to more powerfully contribute their gifts to others and the community.

Anne has a Bachelor of Social Work, Graduate Diploma in Arts (Religious Studies) and a Business Qualification in Leadership and Management. As an avid learner, Anne is currently exploring the world of creative conflict and non-violence. In this vein, she has recently trained as a facilitator in Open Space Technology.

Anne enjoys working with both individuals and organisations. She works with a range of individuals who seek coaching to assist them to discern and take the next step in their life journey. Anne is comfortable focusing on whatever area of a person’s life is their current learning edge. Many of her clients seek coaching to focus on self development challenges, relationships, transitions in work and life roles, work/life balance among others. She also works with leaders and various practitioners in community sector organisations to support and assist their learning as they undertake their important roles in the community.

Anne is a fellow traveler and learner who is committed to her own journey and struggles. It is from this space that she listens with compassion and hope to the story of another. In this process, she finds that there is much to be grateful for, much to take seriously and even more to laugh about.

Anne is grateful for the love of her husband, family and friends and the many blessings that have come her way in being able to do the work she loves, to have experienced many cultures and places in the world and for the many inspirational people who have lit her way. In her spare time she is serious about reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and inspired by the notion that we have the resources to “make poverty history” in the world. She finds it extremely easy to laugh at the ridiculous in all of us with friends, family and colleagues.

What some of my clients have said:
“Thank you most sincerely for your presence, gentle direction and warm wisdom.”

“Anne was always very affirming and celebrated even the tiniest of movement”

“It has been a rewarding experience. The relationship was based on trust, understanding and honesty. I felt listened to and understood. It felt like a working relationship; two people interested and engaged in making achievable goals.”

“My coaching experience has been just so helpful. I found the process hands on, direct, encouraging, forward thinking, positive and inspiring…It was also damn good fun, with useful exercises, good coffee, relaxing surroundings and lots of laughs which is what I need to work effectively.”

How do I know who is the best coach for me?

1. Be clear on what you want.
Be clear on your reasons for hiring a coach. What is it that you want to achieve? Just as you want a coach that’s right for you, so too, coaches like to work with clients they believe they can assist. If you’re clear in what you want, prospective coaches can support your search by indicating if and how they can help you.

2. Trust your sense of attraction.
Second, remember that a synergistic relationship is sometimes more important than the coach’s specific experience. What you want is a collaborative partner — someone you can work and create with, not just someone who gives you advice. So, notice if you’re attracted to the coach as a person, and whether you like their personality and communication style. This is vital if you are to develop a close working relationship. This means you’ll need to have a conversation with them first, just to see if there’s a good comfort or fit between you both.

3. Try before you buy.
Third, take the opportunity which our coaches offer, of a complimentary coaching session. Discuss any current challenges or opportunities you’re facing with the coach and get a feel for how the coach would work with you, and for their personal style and approach.

4. Ask for references if you feel you need to.
Lastly, if you want further information, ask the coach for references from current or past clients, particularly those clients who were similar to you in some way. By speaking with them, you'll form a clearer opinion as to how well the coach can help you.
